Window seats fix weird spaces

07/31/19  |  Liz and Ellie Local

Here in Cambridge, we’ve got lots of old homes with—to put it kindly—weird spaces. We suggest you add a window seat to add value to your home.

Here in Cambridge, we’ve got lots of old homes with—to put it kindly—weird spaces: a tiny nook off a main hallway, an extra window in the living room where a wall really ought to be, or an enormous room that served who-knows-what purpose when it was built. These spots can be difficult to work with; and they end up becoming storage areas or dumping grounds for things we can’t deal with immediately. We at Liz & Ellie Real Estate have a different suggestion: use this space for a window seat.

With a minimum of output (meaning time, energy, and money), you can transform your weird space into usable space, while at the same time add personality and resale value to your home. Pretty cool, if we do say so ourselves! A window seat can have any of the following:
  • Cushions and pillows
  • Curtains or blinds (or even no window treatments)
  • Hidden storage and shelving built in
  • Light, in addition to the natural light already there
  • Whatever else you can dream up!
We love the design aspect of being real estate advisors, so we’re always looking in magazines, perusing Houzz, and sharing clever uses of space in properties we’ve seen. We came across this article in Elle Decor that has a beautiful slideshow of about twenty window seats. From long, thin benches across the whole length of a room to cozy, fluffy reading nooks, you’re bound to get some inspiration from these photos.

Don’t forget that window seats can add resale value to your home with just a small investment. The visual appeal of a window seat enhances your indoor space, connects your home with the natural light of the outdoors, and uses your precious square footage efficiently and attractively. This does pay off when potential buyers walk in. It can lead to more and better offers on your home in the long run. And if you’re not planning to sell soon, you’ll be able to enjoy your window seat every day you live there.
