Summer fun in Boston

05/15/18  |  Liz Lyster

Now that you can safely leave home without a winter coat, it’s time to plan for summer! Bike Month, Boston Calling, Free Fun Fridays, Juneteenth and Shakespeare

Now that you can safely leave home without a winter coat, it’s time to start planning for summer! Boston is chock full of culture, entertainment, history, and food. Here’s a look ahead at some of the best our city has to offer. Mark some favorites on your calendar, and let us at Liz & Ellie Real Estate know about anything we missed.

SoWa Open Market. Back for its 15th season! Every Sunday between May and October, the market will feature local artisans, farmers, specialty food vendors and food trucks. They have also opened the SoWa Beer Barn—a new beer hall and taproom.

Check out SoWa's full list of events this season.

National Bike Month. Get that bike tuned up and pedal to the store, your friend’s house, or work. Bike to work day is May 18.

Don’t have a bike? Do a bike share! Look for Blue Bikes (formerly Hubway) in Metro Boston, or Lime Bike in Malden/Melrose.

Blue Bikes is expanding, and they want your input: go here to read more and to share your suggestions.

Boston Calling. Three days of concerts and entertainment—Headliners are the Killers, Jack White, and Eminem. Other acts include the National, Natalie Portman, a live taping of Pod Save America, and Tyler, the Creator. Buy a ticket for one, two, or all three days. It runs May 25–27 and there are still tickets available.

Free Fun Fridays. From June through August, nearly every cultural venue in Massachusetts will offer at least one free admission day. Choose from the Nantucket Whaling Museum, the Children’s Museum in Boston, and everything in between. You’re sure to learn something new! Click here for the full list of organizations offering a Free Fun Friday, including dates.

Juneteenth. The oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, this year’s festivities take place on June 20th from 5–10 at the Museum of Fine Arts. This is a free event that involves music, speakers, and art.

Free Shakespeare on the Common. July 17–August 5. This year it’s Richard III, one of the tragedies. Pack a picnic and secure a spot on the Common for this annual event.

Dine outdoors. From the cafes on Newbury Street to the lush grass of the Greenway and Esplanade, there are hundreds of outdoor eating opportunities. We love Piattini Wine Bar on Newbury, and can’t say enough about Inna’s Kitchen at the Boston Public Market. Or grab a sandwich from the original Mt. Auburn Street Darwin’s Ltd. location and eat it next to the Charles River.

You decide. It’s all good.
