Sometimes the World is Not a Pretty Place

The world is full of challenging news. There are times when the issues facing us feel overwhelming, but we're not ready to give up and we bet you aren't, either. As a team, we try to focus some of our energy every day on actions, education, and donations to causes that mean something to us...and to all of you.

Below is an alphabetical list of ten organizations we think are making a difference in the world. We've researched each place on Charity Navigator, and all have earned the highest ranking. We also participate personally in several of them, and, in honor of you, our clients, donated money to all this year. Take a few minutes to explore, then choose an organization to support. 826 Boston:

This Roxbury writing and literacy center, also known as the Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute (check it out, it’s a cool story), combines superb teaching, mentoring, and publication of student voices in Boston.

Big Brother Big Sister:

Akilah has been volunteering as a Big Sister for several years now, and she's currently involved with their Mentor 2.0 Program, which supports high schoolers through technology. Though it's all virtual at the moment, she's hoping to get together with her Little Sister soon! For physical donations, check out this link.

Boston Neighborhood Chinatown Center:

Asian and immigrant families can access the support programs offered by the Chinatown Center to build successful communities. Many educational and family-based programs are offered.

Cradles to Crayons:

With chapters in Boston and beyond, Cradles to Crayons focuses on providing children living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive—at home, at school and at play.

Equal Justice Initiative:

EJI, a national organization, is committed to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the US, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people. If you want to learn more, research its founder, Brian Stevenson.

Food For Free:

Twice a month, Liz spends the morning at this Cambridge organization, which combines food rescue and healthy food access for food-insecure residents.

Immigrant Learning Center:

Rebecca has volunteered with the ILC since 2016, where she supports their program of free English language classes, public information on the contributions of immigrants, and research.

Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance:

MAHA educates and mobilizes to increase affordable homeownership opportunities, break down barriers facing first-time and first-generation homebuyers, and close the racial wealth and homeownership gaps.

MSPCA-Angell:

Ellie volunteers to foster dogs, and has cared for dozens of them, sometimes all at one time! She loves MSPCA Angell, which puts compassion first when they protect and provide healthcare to all kinds of animals.

National Resources Defense Council:

This nationwide organization works to protect Earth through advocacy, lawmaking, partnerships, and supporting businesses and science.

On the Rise:

This Cambridge-based organization offers safety, community, and advocacy for homeless and formerly-homeless women.
