"It does not fall yet!" you cry, but I went on a bike ride today and saw quite a few red and orange leaves. And that fall smell—you know the one I'm talking about—is truly in the air. Since Covid is (still) a thing, we should be breathing in the fresh outdoors, not huddling gloomily inside with our terms. The good news is that many of our beloved fall festivals in the Greater Boston area are back after last year's pause (with some Covid-related guidelines, no doubt), and we couldn't be happier to share them with you!

Local things to check out:

September 18, 4-9 PM

This annual local music festival is back after being cancelled last year. It's a family-friendly event with live, local bands and fun activities like pickle ball and shuffleboard. Stay until the end for their gorgeous fireworks display over the Mystic River.

September 22-26

Union Square, Somerville claims to be the site of the invention of the glorious and sticky Marshmallow Fluff. Visit a variety of local businesses and celebrate this unique "food" and indulge your silly side!

October 8-10

Dance and cheer for over a dozen street bands as they parade through the streets of Somerville. and these talented people don't just play instruments, they seek justice while elevating the voices of marginalized groups. This year, all the bands (15 of them!) are local, and they're collaborated with community groups in their neighborhoods to bring this year's HONK! to a new level.

Near Boston:

Daily Through October

Pick your own peaches, apples, and pumpkins, then sample their home-brewed cider. Or, make a reservation and dine at their outdoor restaurant and sample their honey butter fried chicken sandwich, or their Mexican corn with spicy aioli. This is not your run-of-the-mill farm stand!

Daily Through October

Verrill Farm’s stand is brimming with fresh produce (I speak from experience when I say that their tomatoes are out of this world) and there are weekly special events. The first is Family Fun Day on September 18, which includes pick-your-own veggies, a corn husking contest, and hayrides. Check their site for other special offerings.

Further away but worth the trip:

October 1-11, Check the Website for Hours

This fair has it all: huge pumpkins, sheep shearing, chick hatching, exciting rides, and fried dough. Plan now and get your tickets online at a discount before the fair starts and you’ll save a bunch of money. Pro tip: get there when it opens so you can find an easy parking space!

Tue-sun Through the End of October

If you want to avoid all the extras during your farm experience and stick to apple picking, this is the place for you. Walk out into the orchard and enjoy the quiet as you pick a peck of apples. Grab a cider donut on your way out, head over to the Clambox, and enjoy a seafood lunch, and you’ve had a lovely New England fall day.

Weekends Through the End of October

This place has everything but apples and pumpkins! This year their world-famous corn maze’s theme is “Where’s Waldo.” If you haven’t been to Davis before, they don’t mess around. There are tons of physical and mental challenges inside the maze, and it’s so much fun! Their animal discovery center includes goats and...alligators. There’s also a zip line, a massive playground, and dozens more activities, for a fee.
