Lend a hand to honor MLK

12/11/18  |  Liz and Ellie Local

Monday, January 15, 2018 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Cambridge, Boston, and Melrose are offering great community service opportunities.

Monday, January 15th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The kids are off from school, and many of us grownups don't work. Make this day meaningful, and honor the life of Dr. King by doing acts of community service. Many cities and towns offer a variety of events, so check your city’s website, or read more and click on the links below. Ellie and Liz will be at the Cambridge Day of Service, so say hi if you come, too!

All of these events welcome children of all ages.

Cambridge
Many Helping Hands MLK Day of Service at Cambridge City Hall. 2-5 PM.
No need to register, just show up.

At this event, you’ll work with people of all ages to make scarves and blankets for the homeless, Valentine cards for the elderly and veterans, and sort food, clothing and other necessities for people in need.

They encourage you to bring non-perishable food, winter clothing, or a children’s book. Email [email protected] or click here to read their EventBrite post.

Boston
MLK Day of Service at City Year Headquarters, 287 Columbus Avenue.
No registration required, but email [email protected] for more information.

This event will focus on creating supply kits, fleece items, mosaics, panel murals and more for the Boston Public Schools. They’re also doing a coat drive, so bring a gently used coat for a K-8 grade child if you can.

Melrose
The Melrose Human Rights Commission Day of Service for MLK Jr. Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church, 70 West Emerson Street. 9:30 AM-12:30 PM.

No need to register, but try to arrive by 9:30 for the orientation and explanation of all the possible service activities.
This event is city-wide, so you’ll choose what you’d like to do and go to that location. Activities include visiting senior citizens, designing murals, collecting for food pantries, cleaning the public library, and much more. There will also be several panel discussions centered around Dr. King’s mission. Learn more at their Facebook Event Page.

Yes, you can sleep in, but then get out there and join your friends, family and neighbors in brightening up your community. It's a perfect way to honor of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
