Four Fun Outings for Summer, 2021

Even though the weather hasn’t cooperated fully, it truly is summer. We’ve already endured two heat waves and more rain than even our tomatoes want (Mother Nature, send some of this rain out west where they really need it!). As we look ahead to mid-summer and—hopefully—a return to more typical summer weather, it’s time to plan some outings.

But before we get to all the fun, let’s talk about Covid, which is still a very real thing, especially now that the Delta variant is the dominant strain in the US (and in Massachusetts, too).

If you and your family are vaccinated, CDC guidelines say you can pretty much live as you did in the “Before Times.” If you and/or your family members aren’t vaccinated yet, remember to protect yourself and those around you by wearing a mask properly and keeping your distance, especially if you are indoors.

SoWa Open Market

Every Sunday between May and October, this Boston market features farm-fresh food, local arts, food trucks, and even a beer garden. Check their website for hours and updates.

August Adventures

Brought to you by the Highland Street Foundation, who has put on the Free Fun Fridays in years past, is consolidating the excitement into one month. There’s a free event every single day in August at culturally important sites across the state, including the Museum of African American History, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Castle Hill Estate.

Free Shakespeare on the Common

July 21–August 8. This year it’s The Tempest, one of the comedies with a whole lot of drama mixed in. Pack a picnic supper and secure a spot on the Common (they’re encouraging people to register for this free event). Covid protocols including staggered arrival times will be in place for this year’s performances.

Dine Outdoors

From Oleana’s hidden patio to the bustling courtyard at Bow Market, there are nearly unlimited outdoor dining opportunities. My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary at Tallula in Cambridge, in a tiny “greenhouse” on their patio during a rainshower. The Porch Southern Kitchen and Juke Joint serves up fabulous fried chicken and live music. Or head down to Lovejoy Wharf and check out Nightshift Brewing Company’s place with a view of the Zakim Bridge. You can also grab a falafel to go from the Mediterranean Grill in Cambridge and eat it as you walk along the Somerville Community Path. Even restaurants that didn’t offer outdoor dining a few years ago may have outdoor spots now, in response to the pandemic.
