Beautiful weather we’ve been having, huh? We’ve finally left behind the oppressive humidity (why was there so much moisture in the air, and yet here we are in a drought?) and our days are drier and cooler, and the leaves are starting to change.
You might have felt a need to pick apples, go to an outdoor concert, or attend a fair. If so, we’ve got you covered at Liz & Ellie Local. Here are a few of our favorite outdoor happenings for this weekend.
If you want more ideas, subscribe to The Boston Calendar’s weekly email, which sends you information for nearly a hundred events; just pick and choose what peaks your interest.
Here are nine events happening in and around the Somerville/Cambridge area this weekend, September 16-18. The weather forecast looks promising, so find a few events to attend with family and friends! Let us know where you go :)
1) What the Fluff? Festival in Union Square, Somerville. Celebrate Somerville’s history of innovation with music, games, and food (featuring Marshmallow Fluff, which was invented in Somerville)!
2) Project Misik: In a Neponset River Yard In Pope John Paul II Park, Boston. Project Misik creates safe, outdoor spaces for interactive workshops and performances, featuring BIPOC folkx & stories, by the riverside.
3) Caribbean Rum and Food Festival at Roxbury Community College. This 21+ event will showcase Caribbean products, renowned rums and Caribbean cocktails, as well as arts, crafts, and entertainment. There is a fee for this event.
5) Apple picking and farm visits near Boston. My favorites include Smolak Farms in North Andover and Lookout Farm in Natick. Or, go up to Russell Orchards in Ipswich, then continue down to the magnificent Crane Beach and Estate.
6) King Richard’s Faire in Carver, MA is a Renaissance Festival that’s been coming to MA for over 40 years. There will be food, entertainment, and rides (and lots of people dressed in Renaissance clothes calling each other “M’lady” and “M’lord”).
7) SerbFest 2022 at Saint Sava Orthodox Cathedral in Somerville. Get a tour of the cathedral, enjoy live music, homemade food, and learn about Serbian culture.
8) Welcoming Week Chalk Art Project at Somerville Central Public Library. Visit the library with friends and family, bring some chalk or borrow some at the event, and share what makes you feel welcome in your community! This event is on Friday, the 16th.
9) Somerville Museum’s exhibit entitled “Sanctuary City” will open on Friday, September 16. View artwork from emerging and established artists who create work through the lens of the immigrant experience.
Greater Boston's market might feel like a rollercoaster, but we think that the numbers tell a different story. We didn’t have a particularly active residential real estate market last year, at least by local standards. Nonetheless, homes across most communities continued to hold their value — and even appreciate, in many cases.
As of November 2022, it’s illegal to dispose of any textiles in the trash here in Massachusetts. You may have read the headlines or heard a neighbor complain about it (or perhaps you were the one complaining?). But what the heck are you supposed to do with your old socks and stained undershirts? They sure look like trash—why can’t you send them to the dump? The answer is logical, and we’re prepared to get you excited about giving your textiles new purpose after you’re done with them.
It’s the end of the year again, which means it’s time to look back and reflect on 2022. This year, we’ll focus on how we were able to turn lemons into lemonade! Here are some of the most challenging—or as we like to say, interesting—experiences we’ve had this year.Â
